Question by roma: What is it like for a dog to be in quarantine?
I’m moving to Guam and my dog will have to be in quarantine for a month. Normally how are kennel situations like for dogs in quarantine? Are owners allowed to pay a visit to their dogs? Do you feel they’d enable me to bring bedding and food for my dog? The food component I’m a little concerned about considering that my dog has food allergies and ought to be fed a particular diet regime.

if the quarantine is in Guam be careful me personally i dnt believe in the safety of any animals in quarantines since there so many cases of animal abuse in them.
Each country is different. Some are very strict and won’t even let you in the pen to visit your dog. Some let you bring stuff in, toys, bedding etc. But if your dog has allergies and requires a specific food you need to call them, ask someone in charge, write their name down, and find out.
Often if you get your dog a rabies titer test you can avoid quarantine or reduce it to 7-10 days with a USDA certificate. You may want to check into that. That’s how it works for me shipping a dog to Pakistan, Denmark, and Sweden.

i dont think quarantine is such a good idea.
and they probably wouldnt let you see your dogs, they dont care if your animal needs a specific diet, as long as he gets food and water they dont give a damn.
A dog in quarantine means he supposed to be alone 24/7 other than feeding etc..I don’t have personal knowledge on this issue..I think you should ask the authorities that are shipping the dog these questions.
Like a black kid in the corner with a dunce hat on.
Just think about how you would feel being away from your loved ones and you will know what it will be like for your dog. Plus you don’t know what kind of abuse they will go through.
Owners probably wont be able to see their dogs.
If you tell the staff the allergies & tell them the situation they will follow your orders on that one… If they don’t then sue them for cruelty.
Don’t think you can give your dog special bedding… it has to be provided by the kennel.
Exactly like being boarded.
Feed? Sure. Bedding? Nope.
Guess who knows PRECISELY what’s allowed? Those that RUN IT!!!
CALL them,f’rkrisake.
It’s pretty tough – for the owners!! We came back to the UK with seven hounds before the days of Pet Passport. And they had to be in quarantine for 6 months. They were house-dogs and had never been in kennels so you can imagine I was extremely worried. But I wasn’t going to leave them in Canada, so they came back, all of them,
I don’t know what the restrictions are in Guam, but in the UK at the time, there was no visiting for the first 2 weeks. This was when the rabies shots were given. And actually it does give them time to start to settle in without thinking their owners have come to collect them.
But it was hell. And I thought the first 3 months were never going to end. The second half went by much faster. In the UK, although there are some kennels that are better than others, they are all supposed to be Ministry checked, and they all have vets on call 24/7. Because, due to a change of plans, ours were quarantined across the country, we visited every 2 weeks after the first 2. We had them in three runs, 2,2 and 3. And in truth, had we not been bringing multiples in with us, I’d not have done it. I’d never quarantine hounds on their own – there was a Basenji in the run next to ours and after the first few visits, we never saw him out in his run – he looked totally upset and withdrawn when we did see him. And we never saw an owner with him while we were visiting.
I sent them in with ‘a book’ about each one of them. Food, likes etc. Most kennels will work with owners re special feeds – they want their charges to go out fit and healthy at the end of the quarantine period after all. If you send them in with bedding, chances are you won’t be allowed to bring it out with you – it will be destroyed (again might be different with Guam). But I did send bedding with mine.
Sorry about the length of this – speak to the quarantine unit – they will help/advise and make this experience as good as it can be. But your lad will survive – even if you age by the day!!!
Add – although again I don’t know about Guam – we went in with our hounds and spent all afternoon with them, cutting nails, grooming, playing and just sitting with them …… to think they have to live completely alone isn’t true fgs!!!
Guam was declared rabies free more than 20 years ago. Guam officials want to ensure the disease does not return to the island and have established strict policies on importing dogs, cats, as well as other animals.
Title 10 Guam Code Annotated Chapter 34 Article 3 governs importation of dogs, cats and other carnivores into Guam. This law states that these animals are required to complete a 120-day confinement in an approved Commercial Quarantine Facility. If specific pre-arrival and post-arrival requirements are met, animals may qualify for an alternate 30-day quarantine. Please contact the Guam Department of Agriculture at least 90 days prior to intended date of importation to satisfy all entry requirements based on your animal’s entry status.Below are summaries of the two programs.
Private kennels: There are no government quarantine areas on Guam, so pets must be kept in a private kennel. You must have a reservation with a government-approved kennel before shipping your pet to Guam. Currently, there are two approved kennels on island. Ask your sponsor to contact the appropriate kennel for more information:
